The Mind, The Body, and Their Unbreakable Bond

Christie Kruisenga, Emotions, Mind Body and SpiritNo commentsMarch 27, 2015Kara McNabb

Do you ever notice yourself having the same conversation repeatedly, but with different people? Sometimes it’s about a television show, a specific person, or other times it’s about a random life nuance that everyone simultaneously took notice of in the past two days. At first it seems coincidental, but by the third or fourth time you can’t help but wonder why this otherwise irrelevant topic is coming up over and over again. What on earth is it trying to tell you and why can’t it just spell it out with sky writing?

The past few weeks have brought numerous “déjà vu” topics of conversations my way, ranging from persons and places to the most random of things. But most intriguing has been the topic of the mind-body connection, or more specifically, how our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our overall health.

Now given, I work in the natural health field, so this topic is not uncommon, but discussing it with my delightful waiter at lunch? And again in a public restroom? Finally, when someone who claims strong disbelief in holistic “voo doo” mentioned they heard that respiratory symptoms can be linked to unresolved grief, you …

Ladies and Gentleman: For Your Entrainment

Geoff Lamden, Mind Body and Spirit, Sound TherapyNo commentsMarch 21, 2015Andrea Marz

What is Entrainment? Ever turn on your windshield wipers while listening to a song and notice after a while how they are in time with the music? Or put two clocks in a room and notice that the second hands synchronize with each other? “Entrainment is the process by which the powerful rhythmic vibrations of one object are projected upon a second object with a similar frequency, thereby causing that object to vibrate in resonance with the first object.”(Gaynor, Mitchell L.)

This is one reason we are drawn to certain people or places. Entrainment is the reason we like sounds or dislike them. Think about a time when you heard the sound of water, morning birds, frogs, etc. Think about the sounds of an industrial zone, the big city, or even your cell phone. This sonic entrainment, which can be utilized for our well-being, is what I want to tell you more about. “We human beings also react in resonance with the vibrations and fluctuations in our surroundings, so it follows that our physiological functioning may be altered by the impact of sound waves, whether produced by our own voices or by objects or instruments in our environment.”(The Healing …

I Stopped Hiding

Body and Spirit, Emotions, Micah McLaughlinNo commentsMarch 14, 2015Andrea Marz

A year and a half ago, while working with a counselor, I was given a test meant to catch any major mental illness. If I was a sociopath, narcissist, had major addiction or depression, this test was supposed to let me know. While I don’t tend to put a lot of merit in tests, I was curious to see the results. An appointment or two later she said, “Micah, these tests indicate that you have a fairly high amount of anxiety.” I was surprised. While I had been through some fairly significant life shifts, and some emotional ups and downs, I felt cool, calm, and collected. Because the test results indicated otherwise, I realized I had better pay attention and figure out what was really going on. As I looked within, I discovered certain patterns of living that weren’t serving me. Here are some of those patterns and tools I’ve learned to live more authentically.

The plague of positive thinking
While people keep gratitude journals and practice gratefulness in beneficial ways, this is exactly what I was doing that kept me from addressing what didn’t work in my life. I am a person who can always see the positive. I …

ReWild Your Child

Angela McElroy, Children, NatureNo commentsMarch 6, 2015Andrea Marz

“A child found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole. Then it stopped, as though it was unable to go any further.

The child decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bits of cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily, but its body was swollen and wings were shriveled.

The child continued to watch it, expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body. Neither happened. In face, the butterfly spend the rest of its life crawling around. It was never able to fly.

What the child, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the struggle required by the butterfly to get through the opening was a way of forcing the fluid from its body into the wings so that it would be ready for flight. It was the struggle that the child tried to free the butterfly of that ensured its life. “   ~origins unknown

I first heard of this story during an herb class with Jim McDonald teaching …
