Meditation 101

I sat on the carpet. I sat with my back against a wall. I sat in a chair. I laid in savasana. I tried everything I could think of to meditate. But I never seemed able to achieve it – or even come close to it.

I’d done a bunch of reading. I’d heard a lot of personal stories. It seemed like meditation was a breeze and led to something profound. They solved their problems. They tapped into their subconscious. They saw colors and received messages.

In fact, the first time I did a group breath work meditation, one person found herself in some visualization of goddess like energy and beautiful forests with messages coming from the animals. I was slightly embarrassed to share my comparably boring experience. …

The Stress of Back-to-School

After my son’s first day of school, I was exhausted. Like, I-need-a-nap-immediately exhausted. I haven’t felt that tired since…well, come to think of it, since before summer break began.

He’s the one in school. Not much has changed for me. And there’s nothing too tiring about this back-to-school routine. In fact, I’ve been looking forward to having more routine that comes with the school year. So why the exhaustion? I wondered.

And then day two of school hit. Along with the answer.…

Living in the Grey Spaces

Things had always been pretty black and white for me. You either do or you don’t. It either is or it isn’t. It’s yes or no. Hot or cold. Right or wrong.

I was forever throwing the proverbial “baby out with the bath water”, because I thought “well if it is not entirely one way then not even a part of it can be true.” The whole — a sum of its parts.…

Mundane to Magic: Spiritual practice for finding the divine in the daily

Erica McLaughlin, Mind Body and Spirit, MindfulnessNo commentssadhana, spiritualityFebruary 21, 2017Kara McNabb

A few years ago I stumbled into the Ayurvedic spiritual practice of sadhana. Sadhana is a form of awakening that happens when we connect to the spiritual opportunities presented through the activities of daily life.

The Sanskrit word sadhana is often translated as ‘a daily discipline or practice,’ but seems to miss the deeper meaning of this concept. The deeper meaning is captured in the essence of sadhana, which is found in our ability to connect with our spirit through the surrenderance to and enjoyment of the routine activities of our daily lives. To become aware, awakened and alive while performing our daily routines connects us to a source of consciousness that exists beyond the activities themselves. Sadhana is the daily discipline to yield the heart and mind completely to any given activity so that we are always in the present and attuned to the moment. The concept of mindfulness is present within sadhana. To perform our daily activities and routines with mindfulness is to give our full and focused attention – full mind – to what we are doing in the moment we are doing it. Sadhana is the connection to spirit that happens as we bring mindfulness …

When the Root of Your Child’s Behavior Problem is You

Children, Kara McNabb, Mindfulness, RelationshipsNo commentsparentingJanuary 30, 2017Kara McNabb

“I thought you said plastic was bad, Mom,” my eight-year-old son said as I handed him cereal in the green plastic bowl.

I proceeded to acknowledge that yes, I have mentioned that and explained that we don’t want to put hot things in plastic because the heat leaches icky chemicals into our food, and the more we can avoid that, the better for our bodies. “But your cereal is cold, and I don’t have time to wash any dishes right now,” I said as we scurried to get out the door and to school on time.

I took a moment to silently celebrate that he does indeed listen, because sometimes when his dirty socks are still sitting on the living room floor despite my asking him three times to take care of them, I really wonder if “I didn’t hear you, Mom” is true.…

Seasonal Transitions

Guest Post, Mindfulness, Nature, SeasonsNo commentsOctober 11, 2016Kara McNabb

Ah, ‘tis the season for corn mazes, apple cider, and yes…pumpkin spice-flavored everything. Fall is nature’s way of easing us out of warm and welcoming summer days and into the harsher winter. During this transition, it is so easy to focus on how much we’re craving just one more beach day or how shoveling a path to your car in the midst of a blizzard seems like the last thing on earth you want to do. If we aren’t careful, we’ll slip between the cracks of the transition and miss out on an opportunity for growth. Without making the choice to be present this season, winter will be here in the blink of an eye, and we’ll have failed to take advantage of its abundance.

We’ve all read plenty of motivational quotes about how to “be here now” and “live in the moment,” but what does that actually mean? …
