The first time someone suggested I see a naturopath, I was all for it, but mostly because with a description like Magic Micah, you can’t help but be curious about what all the raving is about. But I wondered, what the heck is a naturopath? I remember friends saying something about natural health, how he’s healed Celiac disease, thyroid disease and things of the impossible sort without pharmaceuticals. But I still had no idea what a naturopath really was.
So, a few months later, after the long four-month wait between setting my appointment and actually getting my first appointment, there I was, thoroughly excited for what was to come based on his website info. This plant medicine is powerful stuff! I thought. I had no idea what the other stuff was mentioned in his services section, like light healing touch and breath work, but whatever it was, the really long testimonials sounded pretty authentic. I was even telling friends of mine about his great work, even though I’d never even met this Micah guy. Friends who couldn’t conceive, babies with life-threatening health problems: I was offering to give my coveted appointment away because they were in much more dire circumstances than I.
No one took me up on my offer, so up the stairwell I went, early for my appointment. No one was at the front desk, and I wondered if I’d wandered into the wrong office building. A Natural Health Awakenings magazine sat in the waiting room. Must be in the right spot. I sunk into the waiting room chair nervously. All those testimonials seemed to be from people with pretty tough health stuff – mine paled in comparison. In fact, I wasn’t totally sure I even needed to be here anymore.
A few minutes later, out walked a guy in jeans, no shoes and a messy hair-do. Had he not looked familiar from the picture on the website, I would have assumed he was on his way out. I was about to stick out my hand when I realized he was coming at me with a hug. It was so unexpected, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it — in terms of how “different” it was — but also in terms of how I realized how much I needed that kind of a hug.
I was also shocked that my “doctor” appointment lasted nearly two hours. Last time I’d seen my MD, she was in and out in less than five minutes leaving me with a mind-numbing prescription and lots of questions.
From here on out, I fell deeper into my exploration of natural health. I had hundreds of questions, and they were always answered. And after a couple years, I realized all I wanted to do was spend my appointment time asking questions about why he did this and that and how and what.
I’d debated going back to school to get a second degree in psychology. I was also spending most of my free time researching natural health, and I often had friends ask advice on nutrition and how to live a more natural lifestyle. Then one day, with the push from a friend, it clicked. Naturopathy. And it’s become the best decision I’ve ever made.
I had no idea what I would learn once I started school, but as the knowledge unfolds, naturopathy ignites itself into every single one of my cells. Our bodies are incredible – so complexly created, that it makes perfect sense that we have the capability to undo the “doing” and heal. Whether it’s allergies, anxiety, depression, diabetes or cancer, I believe each one of you holds the power to overcome your circumstances. And that is the magic. Though naturopathic guidance is certainly helpful, the magic isn’t another person; it’s simply what is within each of us and the natural world that surrounds us.
When I walked up those steps for my first naturopathic appointment, I had no clue what to expect. While each person’s experience will be different, there are a few fundamentals. Here’s what to expect:
When I was first introduced to naturopathy, I had no idea what was in store. While my experience has shifted over the years, the magic, for me today, is that I’m writing this blog post right now as a natural health practitioner at Continuum Healing. When I first sunk into that waiting room chair wondering if I was in the right spot, I know now that I absolutely was.
Naturopathy has been life changing in so many ways. To empower others in whatever their journey becomes is the most incredible opportunity.
